Staying safe in parking lots, on a jog, and walking your dog at night is easier when you are carrying one of the safety keychains or flashlights.  With these hand-held, non-lethal weapons, you have a surprise defense in a confrontation with someone who mistakes you for an easy target.

When you need to protect yourself in a hurry, sometimes all you have accessible are your car keys. Do not waste precious seconds trying to dig out your knife. Instead, reach for your self-defense key chain or tactical flashlight. These are designed to be discreet and easy to get to in the event of an attack.

Defensive keychains do not intimidate the user yet can scare off a would-be assailant.

As always, be mindful of local laws before purchasing any kind of self-defense weapon. For example, if you are in an area that bans the purchase of mace, you probably would not want to get yourself one of the mace keychains. However, there are enough options listed that at least one should work for you.

1. SOG Folding Knife Keychain Size

The SOG keychain-size folding knife has a 1.4-inch stainless steel blade and a strong lockback design and folds down to a compact 2 7/8″ .

Kubatons – general information

Kubatons are small sticks, about the size of a thick pen, which can be used to concentrate the force of your blow. Because they are small, you can carry them on your keychain and most people won’t bat an eye.

Hold the Kubaton in your fist. Punch, stab or jab with it! Other rod-like objects can be used in a similar way. In fact, some companies make tactical pens that can be used to defend yourself. You can even use a tough hairbrush or electronic cigarette as a Kubaton!

2. Kubaton Keyring Aluminum Blunt Force

The Kubaton Keyring Aluminum Blunt Force Keychain  looks unassuming enough. It is a thin metal bar with two thin metal spikes sticking out of the side. To use the keychain, hold the bar in your hand with the spikes sandwiching your middle finger. If you are worried that your normal punch is not strong enough, the Kubaton Keyring Aluminum Blunt Force Keychain may be what you need.

Pepper Spray – General

You can also protect yourself with a pepper spray keychain. Pepper spray is non-lethal, but it temporarily blinds your assailant so you can run to safety. Keychain pepper spray is great for runners.

3. SABRE Pepper Spray Keychains

The SABRE Pepper Spray Keychain  is designed for ease of use and effectiveness. This is simply a small canister of pepper spray that fits comfortably in the palm of your hand. In the event of an attack, quickly slide open the spray valve, point the canister in the direction of your attacker, and spray. This will buy you enough time to run away or at least dig out your other weapon.

SABRE is one of the only brands to offer the Quick Release Key Ring providing fast, immediate access; and accidental discharge is prevented with a reinforced trigger twist lock for safe storage in purse or backpack.

SABRE also offers links to free training videos and safety tips to help maximize your personal safety when in the face of danger.

Additional Pocket-Size Safety Suggestions

Consider using a flashlight as a defensive tool as well.

  • They allow you to see in the dark – especially for a distance ahead of you.
  • You can alert people to your location if you need assistance.
  • They can be used to scare away wildlife that may pose a threat.
  • They can be used to disorient a would-be attacker by shining a bright light in their eyes.
  • Your strike capability can be increased.

Another choice would be a tactical pen which can come with multi functions.

No one wants to find themselves in a situation where any of these items are necessary, but it is best to stay prepared. A good self-defense keychain (or flashlight) is your first line of defense in the event of an attack.

I have always had an urge to “be ready’ for emergency situations. To my delight, I discovered the term “prepping” and that there is a community out there willing to learn and share information on a subject close to my heart. I also discovered how entwined self-sufficiency and homesteading are with prepping!
